the surf at Legian can be very heavy - we wouldn't let our 15 year old surf on a couple of days! It is much more powerful than the waves at Byron - you could also hire some boogie boards there if they were desperate and the surf was quiet.
My surfer husband of 30 years experience almost totalled himself on one wave last year!
