I tried for 6 months looking for work. I went for 5 teaching jobs, but Im not qualified. I was asking bars and clubs for marketing / promotion work, nothing! Local wages wont suffice a western lifestyle there, and not many businesses will sponsor your KITAS-working visa, which can be difficult to pay if you arent earning that kind of money. There is a few places that offer "call centre" type work...mainly commission based and although the westerners are on the phone, you are dealing with the tourists that get surveyed on the street...ie outside Matahari Kuta there are constantly Indonesian guys and girls surveying your holiday for the purpose of offering time share.
Teaching requires certification now, and although I did a bit of swim teaching on the side, it wasnt enough to eat off.
I suggest your friend makes the money here, then try establish a business of some kind over there....
