Just like to say thanks everyone for the encouragement when I posted about wanting to try surfing.
I went to the beach one day and was going to go but it was stinking hot and I had my credit cards, phone etc with me so decided to return the next morning.
I returned and sat where the waves were good (as if I'd know). but there were people surfing. I had the usual questions, sarong?, massage?, your son surfing?. I plucked up the courage to ask. I wasn't worried about the surfing but worried about looking like an idiot when they do the demo on the beach.
Well off I went and I was very quickly shown how to stand up and in we went. I paid 50.000. The surf schools charge 350.000. When we were in the water one of the instructors asked my guy (in Indo) how much i I paid. He replied (in Indo) only 50.000.
After a few attempts I stood up and fell straight of (many times). After a while I stood for a few seconds. I was exhausted and it felt like an hour so we went in. It was only 40 minutes. He wanted to go back out but I said I was happy with that. We chatted for about an hour. Heru (his name) practicing his English, me my Indonesian.
The next day I went back again and stood up straight away but lost it after a while and had trouble. A few more goes (getting tired now) and I stood up for about 6 seconds and tried to turn. I turned a bit so I was pleased. A couple more waves and I was done. When we went in we realised we had been in for 1hour 15 minutes.
I was aching the next day and have been busy for the 3 days since.
I will go back again tomorrow to see if I can improve.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend you giuve it a try.
Heru gives the money directly to his boss so I will leave him a tip on my last day. It's so cheap. So thanks again everyone. I think I might have chickened out if I didn't know everyone would ask me if I had been.
