I have had really bad problems with the cane mites over the years, scratching to the point of distraction. Soltuion one - after the event of being bitten - vegetable oil and salt (the cheap option, I had it given to me at a restaurant), phenergan creme from an apotek (if they still sell it - I bought it years ago). Solution two - prevention - I now use RID tropical strength on my legs and have never been bitten again, they must hate the stuff. Also, Avon bug guard, it has citronell oil in it, it is a spray on mozzy repellent, but the mites also seem to hate it (and it smells better than RID).
Trust me, I used to suffer very badly, I would be in tears from the pain and they don't come near me anymore.
