We found out a driver a friend arranged was not supposed to be doing tours as they were not registered as such. From Legian the driver took us through the back streets of Densapar to avoid police so he would not have to pay bribes. After taking 2 hours to get halfway to Ubud, getting lost twice, we got out and found a taxi to escape. Boy was the driver angry and it was very unpleasant, but we would have never made it. I don't know what schemes they have for registering drivers but there must be something. It's worth finding out.
