I have always bought my wooden carvings from some of the markets in kuta, I can't remember the name of the street but it is a one way street going all the way down to the beach and the right hand side of the street is markets all the way to the beach pretty much. I think it is the corner of Legian and Melasti streets.
Anyway, I have no problems bringing the wood carvings back in from these markets. I do try and not bring anymore than 3 or 4 depending on the size normally small to medium sized carvings. I also declare them when I come through customs and as yet have not had any taken away.
I have seen people that did not declare theirs have them removed.
Price it really depends, depending on the quality of the carving I will start anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 of the price they are giving me, then bata up to a happy medium.
Hope this helps
