Hi Shaz,
I didn't know that. I thought all those bongos with white skins looked liked and were 'toy bongos'.
Not that I am doubting you, just goes to show all the things one can learn by watching and listening.
I bring this up as recently I posted quite a bit about how we bought a bongo drum and a guitar in Bali 'Mic's Bali Information Forums' (in the 'shopping' section under 'musical instruments')
Just measured ours and is 50cm or 19and a half inches high and 27cm or 10 and a half inches wide across the top. We paid 200,000rph for it(about $30AUS)
It is the type you see the locals play on the beach. Very solid, hand carved and with a discoloured looking raw-hide top.
Took a tip from a previous post by a BTF member and put it in a garbage bag and sprayed pest killer into it and tied it up in the bag up for a few days. So no bugs, but at Sydney, quarantine still needed to take it to fumigate because of the raw-hide top they said. Cost us $60. (more info on Mic's site)
I don't know much about Bongos but apart from us, musician friends including, guitar teacher etc. agree it has a great sound and is a real bargain compared to what we would pay for one here, same applies to the guitar we bought.
(Mentioned also on Mic's site that the guitar was a 'Forte' made in Japan. Thinking now that although it is a great guitar maybe its not actually what 'it' says and therefore what 'I' said. As I can be so gullible yet wish to give accurate information - anyone, please correct me if I have posted incorrectly so as I can rectify).
