Dromomaniac sums it up well except it is better to say "jalan jalan saja" which means "only walking". I have been hassled badly by Time Share pests at Kuta Square and from other posts Poppies Lane2 has some feral shopkeepers, so if you do not want to be hassled keep away from these places. Although it is annoying that they will not take no for an answer straight away, they usually know that you do not intend to buy. Never pick something up to inspect it as you do in Australia, they immediately assume you intend to buy and usually it is better to buy it than enter into the upsetting haggle that will ensue.
I would not worry about you wife, as we took our 10year old grand-daughter over once and we were worried about hawkers and stopped at Persona Bali to be clear of them. When we went to Kuta she was not the least fussed by the hawkers and loved the attention she got, because she was blonde and pretty, although shy.
