We have been going to Bali for the past 4 years on a yearly basis and our three children who are now 19, 14 and 11 have become more adventourous as the years have gone on. The first year THEY would not let us out of their sight. The second they felt at home and were happy to go say from the MBR to the Jarakarta to have hair plaited. We go to lembongan and my son goes to the locals homes, soccor games, volleyball and surfing on his own, but we also know heaps of the locals.
In Legian this year he ventured to the beach and to the mini mart on his own and he had no problems.
Girls are a little different as it is more the 'darling you are beautiful' and having lasers pointed at their bottoms can quite upset them.
I would keep them all closeby and let them feel their way at first, once you get there they may not want to leave your side.
