Bali, like anywhere else you will travel has its positives and negatives. The worst thing I have found about the place is its water (don't drink it, buy it) and the money changers (take your own calculator or use the banks). The best part of the country is definitely its people, honest, friendly, hardworking and very keen to help.
The only resource I used before my first trip was loney planet (we head out for my third tomorrow). Things you should include on your itinerary......everything you can jam in, our favourites are Tannah Lot at sunset, the food markets in Denpasar, Ubud, the Kuta markets in general, scuba diving off the west coast and definitely the local beer, Bintang (oh, my hubby loves the massages and lazing around the pool). Things you should avoid....anything that you don't feel at ease with (like on any trip anywhere), things that sound too good to be true, drugs and did I mention the water. Tell your Dad that you will be safe and that you will bring him home a gift.....oh, and one other thing, if it wasn't safe, I wouldn't be taking my 7 month old baby!!!
Get online to do some research and if it were me in the same boat as you, I would invest in a Loney Planet travel guide for some light reading, mine is now dog eared and well read.
Enjoy your trip and do what ever you get the chance to whilst in Bali!!
